Professor
Rob Gutierrez
Rob Gutierrez, like many of today’s practitioners, began his journey in Brazilian Jiu jitsu after watching an early UFC tape of legendary Royce Gracie. Completely captivated by Gracie’s techniques, Rob G. immediately began his quest to find instruction in the martial art that took the world by storm. Always the consummate competitor and athlete, Rob G discovered a Royce Gracie training association in Westchester County, New York. Though he began training in his late 20′s, Rob G took Brazilian Jiu Jitsu to heart and devoted 100% of his time and energy to mastering this new art. Growing up with role models such as Bruce Lee and Chuck Norris, Rob G knew from the first day he set foot on the mat that he’d found his calling in life.

Training under famous Gracie brothers such as Royce, Rorion, and Rolker, and some of their top instructors like Caique, Rob G. excelled at Jiu Jitsu. Royce promoted him to blue belt in under a year, and two years later awarded him his purple belt. During this time, Rob G participated in Jiu Jitsu tournaments and won several medals. From Westchester, Rob G. moved on to a Relson Gracie academy in the Bronx where he was one of the instructors. Motivated to learn as much and as quickly as possible, Rob G met and began to train with former UFC fighter Sean Alvarez – a Renzo Gracie Brown Belt at the time. From this new training regimen, Rob G was introduced to a different Jiu Jitsu style – Gracie Barra, a more aggressive variation of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Training under Sean and Nelson Monteiro, Rob G began to blend these two styles of Jiu Jitsu. Rob G would learn to develop his own hybrid style mixing Royce’s traditional passive style with the more aggressive Gracie Barra style.

During this time Rob G would also begin training at the world famous Renzo Gracie academy in NYC. This latest move would shape Rob G’s Jiu Jitsu career as he had the opportunity to train with high level practitioners and completely immerse himself in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Shortly thereafter, Rob G would earn his brown belt under Sean Alvarez (who had himself been promoted to black belt) and Nelson Monteiro. A year later, Rob G was again promoted – this time to black belt by Nelson Monteiro.

Rob G has been a black belt since 2004. Throughout his journey he still feels the same passion and joy he felt that first day he began training Jiu Jitsu. And from those early blue belt days, Rob G has been coaching and teaching. A natural instructor, teaching has always filled Rob G with a deep sense of satisfaction and fulfillment. Rob G derives great satisfaction in passing on the art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu to his many students.

Rob G still finds time to compete and challenges himself on the mat and in major tournaments around the country. Having done very well in competition, Rob G has proved once again he has an elite level of Jiu Jitsu and looks forward to competing again in the years to come. Additionally, Rob G trains in class and regularly spars with all of his students, regardless of age or ability, as well as his fellow colleagues. For Rob, every training session provides lessons in the endless journey that is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
